Spotify, the global music streaming giant, has undeniably left an electrifying impact on the Nigerian music scene. It's a scene that has been celebrating milestones and embracing the rich culture of Afrobeats, a genre that continues to shape the soundtrack of a generation.
The recently concluded "Afrobeats: Journey of a Billion Streams" campaign by Spotify wasn't just a music celebration; it was a cultural phenomenon. On October 12th and 13th, 2023, Spotify brought together a diverse array of celebrities, podcasters, influencers, music executives, media personalities, and die-hard music fans at two experiential events: #SpotifyPodcastsLagos and #SpotifyAfrobeats. Held at La Madison Place in Lekki, Lagos, these events were a vibrant tribute to the enduring legacy of Afrobeats and its remarkable journey.
The two-day festivities kicked off with a lively fireside chat, featuring a panel of industry experts, including Tony Doe, Ayomide Tayo, Dami Aros, and Fay Fay, followed. The discussion ranged from the success of Afrobeats to Spotify's contributions to the music ecosystem.
Two live podcast recordings followed, featuring acclaimed Nigerian content creators Jola Ayeye, Feyikem Abudu of I Said What I Said, and Joey Akan of Afrobeats Intelligence, and kept the audience spellbound. Joey Akan had a vibrant discussion touching on a range of topics, from the success of Afrobeats to playlisting strategies and Spotify's role in shaping the music industry, with Victor Okpala, Spotify’s Artist & Label Partnerships Manager, West Africa as the guest. The live show by "I Said What I Said" featured artists Nissi and Pheelz, and a live Q&A session with the audience added an interactive element. The evening reached its crescendo with an electrifying performance by Pheelz.
On Day 2, the atmosphere was electric, and the dance floor came alive. DJ Tohbad masterfully set the stage with a stream of chart-topping tracks by Nigerian artists. The night's performances featured emerging and established artists who had the audience enthralled. Bloody Civilian had guests singing along to her hits. FAVE, captivated the crowd with her mesmerizing songs including the hit single “KANTE.”
Shallipopi, the breakout Nigerian Street Pop artiste, set the stage ablaze with hits like "Obapluto," "Ex-Convict," and "Elon Musk."
