What is TurnTable Top 50
WHAT IS TURNTABLE TOP 50?
TurnTable Top 50 is an aggregate music chart that combines radio airplay in Nigeria, TV airplay in Nigeria & freemium streaming in Nigeria. This means only consumption activity within Nigeria is factored into the chart.
The radio stations include but not limited to Cool FM, SoundCity, City FM, Max FM, Beat FM, RayPower, Wazobia FM, and Independent Radio Benin.
The chart currently factors in 5 major TV stations in Nigeria for its TV airplay component.
Finally, it combines weekly streaming numbers from the three major freemium platforms in the country – Audiomack, YouTube NG and Boomplay.
TurnTable Top 50 employs a methodology that combines radio audience impression (Radiomonitor/MPS), TV audience impression (Radiomonitor/MPS) and streams. The chart accounts for the music consumption and activity of over 60 million Nigerians across radio, TV and streaming – making it the biggest music chart and only aggregate music chart in the country.
The tracking week for the three components of TurnTable Top 50 is Friday to Thursday; the tracking week begins on Friday (to coincide with Global New Music Friday) and ends on Thursday.
Each chart is dated the week in which it’s published, i.e. the first issue of the chart will be dated November 9, 2020, which represents the chart week of November 9 - 15. For example;
- Friday, January 15, 2021 – tracking week for radio, TV and streaming begins
- Thursday, January 21, 2021 – tracking week for radio, TV, and streaming ends
- Monday, January 25, 2021 – new Top 50 chart released with issue dated January 25.
WHAT IS TO COME?
Addition of streams from paid platforms to the data point; while paid streaming platforms (Apple Music, Tidal, YT Music and Deezer) account for less than 1% of music consumption in Nigeria, they still represent a subset of music consumption that contributes to revenue generation.
Addition of more radio and TV stations; TurnTable Charts aims to add more radio and TV stations in the country.
These data points will be added in 2021.
Expansion of Top 50 to Top 100; additionally, the publication will consider the expansion of the TurnTable Top 50 to a Top 100 list due to the increase in activity on radio and streaming, as well as to accommodate less popular genres/artistes on the chart.
WHEN WILL TURNTABLE CHARTS LAUNCH AN ALBUMS CHART?
Soon. We want to create an aggregate chart for albums in Nigeria and that will be launched in 2021. While singles/songs rely on popularity (which is why the Top 50 = radio + TV + streaming), albums rely on active consumption – which at the time is majorly, streaming.
A standard Albums Chart that aggregates all platforms will be created once all the necessary data points are acquire.
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF TURNTABLE TOP 50?
TTC aims to create a standard chart that allows listeners know the most popular records in the country – just like in other countries such as the United States, France, the UK, Canada, South Korea and more. This will also allow industry stakeholders (artistes, record labels, A&Rs, marketers, publishers) to objectively track the consumption behavior of listeners over a period.
Nigerian music deserves a standard chart that aggregates all means and platforms of consumption in the country.
