There was a time when R&B was more than just a genre; it was a language of the heart, a soulful dialogue between artist and listener. Before the digital age painted music with a broad, impersonal brush, R&B was a canvas on which artists poured their deepest emotions. They sang in the rain, their voices echoing the yearning of a solitary soul. They crooned in the desert, their melodies mirroring the arid landscape of a love-starved heart.
The art of wooing was a cornerstone of this era. It was a dance, a delicate interplay of words and rhythm, a promise of passion and commitment. R&B was the soundtrack to courtship, the aphrodisiac that ignited hearts and fueled dreams.
While the modern era seems to have diminished the language of longing and declaration of desire, with a perceived lack of commitment, Arcydan and Deesick’s “Moment” EP is a refreshing departure.
Upon receiving Arcydan and Deesick’s “Moment” EP, while I initially approached it with a sense of obligation, I was pleasantly surprised by the intentionality, brevity, and quality that graced my ears.
The EP consists of 5 songs with a run time of 8 minutes, 2 seconds due to the additional sped-up versions (Moment & Everytime).
"Moment" is a love song that expresses a deep longing for companionship and intimacy. Expressing vulnerability, the yearning for their partner when they are not within reach.
"Everytime" expresses infatuation and attraction. They sings about their desire, how they head over heels and craving company.
"Outro" expresses deep affection and commitment. Providing a sense of protection and guidance, promising to be there for the lover through thick and thin. There's a strong emphasis on honesty and transparency in the outro. Arrycdan and Deesick make use of contemporary sounds to explore the aspects of love.
Curious to find out more about the duo, I discovered Deesick (Born Ayodeji Daniel), an R&B and Afropop artist. He made his very first studio-recorded single in 2015 titled "IBADI" and then went on to record his first mixtape titled "THE SOUND MONSTER" in 2016. He discovered his sound on his official debut project titled "FAR," released in August of 2021. While Arcydan (born Matthew Daniel) finds inspiration in the artistry of others, often putting his spin on popular tracks by breathing new life into them.
Arcydan and Deesick have crafted a love letter with their EP. In a world often dominated by fleeting connections and instant gratification, their music feels like a refreshing throwback to a time when courtship was an art form.
