Typically, when albums are released, the hype peaks within the first few days. Everyone is talking about the songs, the features, and the quality. Listeners rush to stream the project, eager to understand what makes it special. For some artistes who release albums sparingly, anticipation builds long before the drop and the first week usually brings in their highest numbers. Afterward, only dedicated fans and those who truly connect with the music keep the streams going, while most listeners pick a few favorites and move on to the next big release.
For Adekunle Gold’s sixth studio album, ‘Fuji’, the story is different. Against the usual industry curve, ‘Fuji’ recorded even higher numbers in its second week than in its debut. After debuting at No. 7 on the Official Top 100 Albums chart with 4.5 million on-demand streams (3,020 album units), it climbed to No. 5 the following week, tallying 4.85 million on-demand streams (3,230 album units sold).
While a few EPs have shown similar upward trajectories, ‘Fuji’ stands out as the first full length project to achieve this feat. Among the select list of projects with this rare streaming pattern are:
- Kizz Daniel’s ‘TZA’ – debuted at No. 1 with 4.3 million streams, rising to 5.5 million in its second week. The project spent 47 weeks on the chart.
- Tml Vibez’s ‘Timileyin 2.0’ – debuted and peaked at No. 3 with 3.7 million streams in its first week and 4.7 million in its second, lasting 68 weeks on chart.
- Tml Vibez’s ‘Xin Mao’ – entered at No. 9, peaked at No. 3, moving from 2.7 million to 3.1 million streams, and spent 54 weeks on chart.
- Famous Pluto’s ‘Uzama the 3rd’ – debuted and peaked at No. 2, growing from 6.9 million to 8.3 million streams, remaining for 17 weeks.
- Qing Madi’s self-titled EP – debuted at No. 38, peaked at No. 10, with streams rising from 450,000 to 555,000, and an impressive 97 weeks on chart.
In a time where the music scene is fast-moving and album interests burn out quickly, ‘Fuji’ is setting a pace that states otherwise. It is important to note albums by major artistes that debuted in the top ten off a partial availability in a tracking week – typically one day or two. These albums tend to rise in streams in their first full week of availability (see, BNXN’s ‘CAPTAIN,’ Rema’s ‘HEIS’ and Olamide’s ‘Ikigai Vol. 1’). Adekunle Gold’s ‘Fuji’ is the first album to achieve this feat with full tracking weeks in both its first and second chart appearance.
