How TopLux Records is Using an Unconventional Approach to Turn Social Media into One Giant Audition Room
The traditional music industry talent pipeline is officially evolving, and newly launched Nigerian-based record label, TopLux Records, is taking full advantage. Instead of deploying traditional scouts to hunt through overcrowded showcases or sift through cold email inboxes, TopLux is completely rethinking the talent discovery playbook.
The label earlier launched an open-verse challenge powered by a custom instrumental from Afrobeats premier producer Ozedikus, the hitmaker behind some of the streaming era’s biggest global anthems. By democratizing the audition process, TopLux Records is turning music recruitment into an open, social-first arena.
“The industry doesn’t need another label posting a new signing and hoping the right person sees it,” the TopLux leadership team explains. “The gap in talent, both in Nigeria and globally, has always been discovery and trust. The open verse format lets us find artists in their natural habitat, on their terms, with zero barrier to entry. No fees, no gatekeeping, just bars. If you’re good, we’ll find you.”
Traditional scouting often restricts labels to local geographic hotspots or pre-networked talent. TopLux’s digital-first approach breaks down these regional borders, opening the floodgates to undiscovered vocalists across the entire African continent and beyond. While traditional A&R relies heavily on industry gatekeepers and static demo tapes, this open-verse model relies on raw talent and authentic social engagement, allowing an artist’s charisma and performance to speak for itself in real time.
This initiative is far more than a quick promotional campaign as TopLux has established the challenge as a genuine talent pipeline. Standout entrants selected from the pool of submissions will not just gain social clout, they will be offered exclusive recording deals with TopLux Records, providing raw bedroom artists with a direct route to a professional music career.
Yet, for the team behind the label, the viral competition is only the beginning. “The challenge is the entry point, not the destination,” they emphasize. “We’re building TopLux as a home for artiste development done properly, real deals, real infrastructure, and real long-term investment in careers, not one-off viral moments. The challenge is how we meet the talent; what happens after is the actual label.”
Music executives and independent musicians alike should become accustomed to TopLux rewriting the rules as the label continues to question established conventions.
“Conventional got us an industry where too much good music never leaves someone’s phone. We’d rather build things that meet artists and fans where they actually are culturally, digitally, and geographically than keep doing things the old way just because it’s familiar. Expect a lot more of that,” the leadership team adds.
