Buga, Peace Be Unto You or Overdose: Which Will Be the First to Top Every Chart in 2022?

Three of the biggest songs of 2022 all have the chance to reach No. 1 on every single chart in Nigeria but it seems like they might be preventing each other from getting this

The clean sweep certificate has only been achieved by four songs since TurnTable Charts began tracking; Davido’s “FEM” which famously achieved this in a single week, Omah Lay’s “Godly” which ended up as the No. 1 song of 2021, Kizz Daniel’s “Lie” – which is responsible for kick starting the run of the No. 1 artiste of 2022 so far and Joeboy’s “Sip (Alcohol)” – the most-steamed Nigerian song on both Boomplay and Audiomack (Buga has since claimed Boomplay for itself).

So who is going to get the next certificate? At the moment, only three songs have the opportunity of claiming it anytime soon. Skiibii’s “Baddest Boy (Remix)” with Davido missed out on the clean sweep certificate by just one chart – it peaked at No. 2 on radio while Fireboy DML & Ed Sheeran’s “Peru” never topped Shazam and Triller charts. Asake’s “PALAZZO” never reached No. 1 on TV and Boomplay while Black Sherif’s “Kwaku The Traveller” didn’t top any of the two airplay charts in Nigeria. It is fair to say none of these songs have any chance of claiming the certificate as they have passed their peak period.

Which brings us to three songs, “PBUY” at No. 2 on this week’s Nigeria Top 100, “Buga” at No. 3 and “Overloading (Overdose)” at No. 4 (current No. 1 song “For My Hand” is still a long way off clean sweep territory).

Peace Be Unto You

What has the song topped so far?

Apple Music, Audiomack, Deezer, Shazam, Spotify, and Radio. It just reached No. 1 on TV and Triller charts for the first time this week.

What hasn’t the song topped yet?

Boomplay and YouTube

What are its chances?

Before the release of Love, Damini – pretty high. Now, it is harder to say. Also, it doesn’t help that the artiste has a new single in the form of “Bandana” which is now getting attention (and heading towards clean sweep territory).

Buga (Lo Lo Lo)

What has the song topped so far?

Apple Music, Audiomack, Boomplay, Deezer, Shazam, Spotify, Triller, YouTube and Radio

What hasn’t the song topped yet?

TV

What are its chances?

It has the best chance of claiming the certificate. Why? It is currently leading this week’s race for No. 1 on the TV chart. However, it is important to note that it led the race for the first six days of the tracking week – before losing the top spot on the final day to “Peace Be Unto You”

Overloading (OVERDOSE)

What has the song topped so far?

Apple Music, Audiomack, Boomplay, Deezer, Shazam, Triller, and Radio

What hasn’t the song topped yet?

Spotify, TV and YouTube

What are its chances?

Pretty slim. It is difficult to imagine the song rebounding on Spotify chart following the debuts of major albums by Omah Lay and Burna Boy. However, the release of an official video could spark a new life for the song, which could help it top both YouTube and TV charts – and possibly get rejuvenated on streaming platforms especially Spotify.

This article is a part of a weekly breakdown called Chart Watch. Chart Watch is a weekly programme that will be available on Twitter Space every Wednesday (however, the first episode will launch on Thursday, July 21). On the space, listeners can be a part of a Q&A session on everything Nigerian music and charts as well as get a first look into what to expect on the charts in the coming week.
