Right before the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) became mainstream, there were several reactions to it. Many worried that the machines would take human jobs, while others were bothered about technological overthrow in general. But slowly and surely, people began to accept that the concept had come to stay. They learnt to adapt, and see AI as more of an assistance tool than a threat. However, not many imagined AI finding its way into music in any way. But maybe subconsciously, we all might have.
Urban Chord’s AI-generated album, ‘Choir Refix’ album isn't the first many but in a way, it has made its way into listeners’ playlists and now into the Nigerian Official Top 100 Albums chart. The album debuted at No. 43 with 834,000 on-demand streams. On digital streaming platforms, the album is credited to Olajide Emmanuel Ajayi, who is likely the creative mind behind the AI prompts and production process.
Many are oblivious to the fact that the album was made by AI because it accurately sounds just like any real choir. ‘Choir Refix’ houses eight songs, all remakes of popular Nigerian songs. Opening the album, "Getting Paid” strums in, a cover of Sarz’s feature with Asake, Wizkid, and Skilibeng. Following right after are covers of Omah Lay’s “i’m a mess”, Asake’s “BADMAN GANGSTA” ft. Tiakola, Emanvee’s “Celebrate Me Now” and Olamide’s “99” featuring Seyi Vibez, Asake, Young Jonn, and Daecolm.
A notable song off the album is the sixth titled “Afro mix”, a compilation of several songs starting with Rema’s “Calm Down”, Asake’s “Lonely At The Top”, Wizkid & Tems’ “Essence”, Burna Boy’s “Last Last”, Davido’s “UNAVAILABLE” ft. Musa Keys, Ayra Starr’s “Rush”, Omah Lay’s “understand”, CKay’s “love nwantiti (ah ah ah)”, Joeboy’s “Sip (Alcohol)”, and closing off with FireboyDML’s “Peru”. The last songs on the album are covers of Asake’s evergreen “Lonely At The Top”, and Libianca’s “People”.
If you think you’ve had enough, wait until you hear the upcoming Urban Chords’ AI album titled ‘Grace Till December”. It’s a gospel-themed album that will include an AI cover of the popular gospel track, “No Turning Back”
