“Buga (Lo Lo Lo)” spent seven weeks at No. 1 in 2022 – the joint longest for any song during the year on its way to becoming the top song of 2022. The End of the Year Charts 2022 combines data across streaming and airplay (radio + TV).

Breakdown of the Top Ten

1.     “Buga (Lo Lo Lo)” by Kizz Daniel & Tekno: The song finished as the No. 1 song on streaming with a record 57.9 million streams – the biggest of any song ever in a calendar year in Nigeria – as well as in the top five of both radio and TV charts for 2022. It ended the year as No. 4 on radio with 909 million radio impressions and 185 million TV impressions (also No. 4 on TV). “Buga” joins Omah Lay’s “Godly” (2021) and Dj Neptune’s “Nobody” with Joeboy & Mr. Eazi (2020) as the overall No. 1 songs of a calendar year since TurnTable Charts began tracking in the country.

2.       “Bandana” by Fireboy DML & Asake: With “Bandana” at No. 2, EMPIRE becomes the first label to have the top two songs in a year in Nigeria (more on EMPIRE in the rest of the countdown). The song tallied 52.2 million streams (No. 3 on streaming), 917 million radio impressions (No. 3 on radio) and 131 million TV impressions (No. 18 on TV). As a result, Fireboy DML becomes the first artiste to have a top ten song in the End of the Year Charts in three consecutive years (“Vibration” at No. 9 in 2020, “Peru” at No. 8 in 2021 and also in 2022) and “Bandana” at No. 2 in 2022).

3.     “Overloading (Overdose)” by Mavin featuring Ayra Starr, Ladipoe, Boy Spyce, Magixx & Crayon: For a second consecutive year, a song released under Mavin finishes in the top 3 – “Feeling” was No. 2 in 2021. “Overdose” tallied 49.3 million streams (No. 4 on streaming), 791 million radio impressions (No. 7 on radio) and 42.4 million TV impressions (No. 163 on TV) – a lack of an official video didn’t help the song on satellite TVs during the year. As a result, Ladipoe becomes the first rapper to have a song in the top ten of consecutive Year-End Charts (he will be joined by Olamide later on). Ayra Starr is also the first female artiste to have a song in the top ten of consecutive Year-End Charts (“Bloody Samaritan finished as No. 10 last year)

4.      “Sungba (Remix)” by Asake featuring Burna Boy: Asake’s biggest song of 2022 in Nigeria is “Sungba,” particularly its remix featuring Afrobeats superstar, Burna Boy. It tallied 56.4 million streams (No. 2 on streaming), 136 million TV impressions (No. 16 on TV) and 424 million radio impressions (No. 63 on radio).

5.     “Calm Down” by Rema: Another song released under Mavin in the top five and as a result, the entire top five comprises of songs released under either EMPIRE (3) or Mavin (2). “Calm Down” tallied 1.25 billion radio impressions (No. 1 on radio), 218 million TV impressions (No. 2 on TV) and 28.4 million streams (No. 19 on streaming).

6.     “Peace Be Unto You (PBUY)” by Asake: More Asake in the top ten and the artiste’s only solo entry in the top ten of 2022. “PBUY” tallied 46.2 million streams (No. 5 on streaming), 145 million in TV impressions (No. 11 on TV) and 643 million radio impressions (No. 21 on radio).

7.     “Last Last” by Burna Boy: Burna Boy’s first solo song to finish in the top ten of an End of the Year Charts – he previously had “Jerusalema (Remix)” in 2020 and aforementioned “Sungba (Remix).” The song tallied 231 million in TV reach (No. 1 on TV), 44.3 million streams (No. 7 on streaming) and 613 million radio impressions (No. 28 on radio).

8.     “Baddest Boy (Remix)” by Skiibii & Davido: This is first song in the top ten that’s not released under EMPIRE or Mavin – “Baddest Boy (Remix)” which was the No. 1 song on the Mid-Year Charts ends the year as the overall No. 8 song. It tallied 759 million radio impressions (No. 9 on radio), 147 million TV impressions (No. 9 on TV) and 37.8 million streams (No. 10 on streaming).

9.     “Peru” by Fireboy DML & Ed Sheeran: “Peru” makes history as the first song ever to make the top ten of two different End of the Year Charts – 2021 and 2022 (it ended as the No. 8 song of 2021). The song tallied 1.13 billion radio impressions (No. 2 on radio), 215 million TV impressions (No. 3 on TV) and 23.8 million streams (No. 28 on streaming).

10. “Omo Ope” by Asake ft. Olamide: Asake’s record fourth song in the top ten.

·        EMPIRE and Mavin Records contributed to nine songs in the top ten; the former had 7 and the latter had 2.

·        There are only three solo entries in the top ten – none in the top ten.

·        EMPIRE has seven songs in the top ten; more than any organization ever in a year (six as a label and one for distribution of “Last Last” in Nigeria)
