Remember the saying, “Africa is a country”? For many years now, Africa has been viewed through that single lens based on how people interact with our art, culture, and music. On Ghanaian charts and DSPs, Nigerian music has long predominantly made its way there. However, new developments have begun and a number of Ghanaian artistes are breaking through and earning their spots on Nigeria’s Official Top 100 Albums chart) with their projects.
A recent milestone was achieved by Medikal, originally known as Samuel Adu Frimpong, who bagged his first entry into the albums chart with his ‘DISTURBANCE 2’ album debuting at No. 52. This has shone a spotlight, and further shifted attention to other Ghanaian artistes that have advanced in a similar way. When Camidoh released the ‘Sugarcane’ EP in 2022, it peaked at No. 26 with a record of 337,000 on-demand streams and approximately 225 album units sold. That same year, Black Sherif, one of Ghana’s widely known musical acts, had his debut album appear on the album charts. ‘The Villain I Never Was’ (2022) peaked at No. 6 with a record of 3.42 million on-demand streams and about 2,280 album units sold in that week. It comes as no surprise that his sophomore album, ‘Iron Boy’ (2025) did even better as it peaked at No. 3 on the Official Top 100 Albums chart becoming the highest charting album by a Ghanaian act in Nigeria (also highest among all other African acts).
Olivetheboy’s ‘Avana’ EP (2023) is also part of this as it sold approximately 297 units with 445,000 first-week streams and reached as high as No. 8 on the albums chart.
In 2024, the joint collaboration between Lasmid and Nigerian artiste, Tml Vibez on ‘Sweet Songs 4 You’, peaked at No. 15 with 2.23 million on-demand streams and about 1,487 album units sold on its debut week – this became the first ever joint project between a Nigerian & Ghanaian act to appear on the official albums chart.
Just this year, Ghana music pioneers, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy appeared on the albums chart with ‘Voice of the Crown’ and ‘THE TORCHER’ (2025) respectively. ‘Voice of The Crown’ peaked at No. 63 recording 563,000 on-demand streams and 375.3 album units sold in the first week, while ‘THE TORCHER’ reached No. 47 on the chart and for its first week, 702,000 streams and 468 units sold. This Ghana music appearance on the Official Top 100 Albums chart won't be complete without King Promise’s third album ‘True To Self’ (2024) and Christian music group, Team Eternity Ghana’s ‘Testimony’ (2024). Both released in 2024, they peaked at No. 57 with 316,000 on-demand streams and No. 97 with 126,000 on-demand streams respectively.
Over three years of representation has shown the acceptance of Ghana Music in other parts (particularly, Nigeria). This further shows that as this becomes more frequent, we can look forward to having more Ghanaian projects on the singles, albums, streaming and radio charts in the near future.
